"Oh you turned the nave the nave you know that's the centre you turned that first". [nave = wooden centre of cartwheel to which spokes are fixed, recorded in this survey (often pronounced 'naff' as here) in several sites in the north of England]

Can someone explain what the speaker answers to the question at the beginning of the interview, "You'd have to do it by hand, wouldn't you?"
