Speaker's note: Aged 27 and from Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire (now East Dunbartonshire), Scotland. Born 20 February 1889 in Kirkintilloch. Educated at elementary school at Kirkintilloch. From the age of 18 he was a soldier serving in England and South Africa. His mothertongue is Scots his 'additional language' is English. He can read and write in English and Scottish. Answers yes to the question 'Can you sing and play music?' Instrument: 'Tenor horn (not in the camp). Religion: Protestant. Occupation: tailor. Item note: William reads the Parable of the Prodigal Son (taken from Luke chapter XV, verse 11-32).
